Including your dogs in photos isn’t just some cute idea; it’s a way to document the true story of your life, the way you live it every day. You and I both know that includes your dogs, too.
At MB Bryant Images, I believe in capturing those unscripted, real-life moments that matter most, and for many of us, that means including our four-legged friends. Whether your dog is your first baby (or your only one), rest assured that they can be part of every milestone—from maternity to family photos, and everything in between. I have photographed hundreds of dogs around Spokane, WA over the years and nothing rattles me – No dog is too energetic, shy, or quirky to be part of your story. This guide is here to help you feel confident and prepared, so you and your pup can enjoy the moments together.
Why Include Your Dog in Your Photos?
Dogs are more than just pets—they’re family, adventure buddies, and often the keepers of our secrets. Including them in your photos isn’t just about the cuteness factor or a great shot for IG; it’s about preserving the bond you share. Whether it’s welcoming a new baby or celebrating an engagement, your dog has been there for every step, making them a natural part of your story.
Is your family sans human kids and your dog(s) are what makes you a complete unit? That’s fantastic, too. Family photos aren’t just for families that have human children, your dogs counts just as much.
Family Photos with Dogs and Capturing Everyday Adventures
When it comes to family photos, dogs bring an extra layer of joy and spontaneity. Yes, yes sometimes chaos but let’s focus on the joy for a moment. The key to a successful session is keeping things relaxed and letting the moments unfold naturally. Whether it’s on the lake in your kayak or a cozy cuddle at home, I find that the best shots often come from unplanned moments. So, let go of those Pinterest poses you found and lean into interacting with your dog in all the ways you normally would on a Saturday morning.
Another key to a great session is choosing the best location for your dog to thrive. That’s where your photographer comes in. We can help you choose a spot with less people/distractions or pick a place your dog is familiar with for a layer of predictability. Often setting your family up for success starts and ends with the best dog friendly family photo location. If you’re in the Inland NW, I can totally help you with a few ideas.

Including Your Dog in Newborn Photography Photoshoots
Welcoming a new baby is a monumental event, and your dog is likely just as excited (or curious) as you are. Including your OG baby in newborn photos can result in some of the best photos, capturing the full story of your growing family.
Safety and comfort are my top priorities, and I’ll work with you to ensure that both your baby and your dog are happy and relaxed. Often dogs that are normally pretty chill can struggle with someone coming into their home and having a new family member adds an extra layer to navigate. However, this doesn’t mean it’s something to avoid. For more tips on safely including dogs in newborn photos you read where I break it all down in this past blog all about photos, dogs and babies.
How to Include Your Dog in Maternity Photos
Of all the sessions I meet dogs at, sometimes maternity photos are the hardest. Most of the time Mom is not feeling like wrestling a rambunctious dog at our shoots. So, this is where your partner can really lean in. But furthermore, it’s OK to bring a friend to help hold your dog in between shoots so you don’t have to worry about navigating pregnancy and Fido as he bounds down the trail.

Engagement photos should totally include your dog
Your engagement is a celebration of love, and if your dog has been a part of your journey as a couple, they should absolutely be part of this moment, too. From holding the ring on their nose to simply being themselves, dogs level up engagement photos. We’ll choose activities that you naturally enjoy together—like a walk in the park or a coffee date—so the photos feel genuine and true to your story.
While I’ve gotten some super adorable posed photos with dogs at my Spokane Engagement photos, often the best ones are simply the family playing together. Even when that means rolling around in the snow.
I’ve retired most of my Spokane wedding photographer days, but I can always be enticed if you promise to bring your dog. Even if we aren’t working together, check out my best advice for including your OG baby in your engagement photos.
Dogs in Your Wedding? Yes, Please.
I only take a handful of Pacific NW weddings anymore, but when I do they are almost always for my dog loving clients. Here are my top four pieces of advice for including your dog in the special day.
- Always check with the venue first as there are often policies on bringing dogs. This seems like a no brainer but often this detail gets overlooked and it’s bummer on the big day.
- Make sure you tell guests ahead of time that your pooch will be there. Some people are allergic are truly afraid and it’s best to give people a heads up.
- Designate a dog handler that’s anyone in the wedding party. Someone that can step in at any time to help with your pup.
- Lastly, your dog doesn’t need to be there the entire time. I’ve had weddings where the dog was the best man but I’ve also had them come just for family photos before. Know your dog and only include them at a level you know they will be comfortable with.
Advice for Reactive or Shy Dogs in Photos
If your dog is shy or reactive, you might worry about how they’ll handle a photo session. Don’t stress—I have experience working with dogs of all temperaments. We can choose a quiet, familiar location where your dog feels safe, and I’ll take the time to get to know what they need before we start. I have a long lens on my camera and sometimes I never need to get closer than 30’ away to give your dog a lot of room to breate.
The goal is to capture who they really are, quirks and all. And when I say, I get it… trust me, I do. One of those quirky dogs is currently snoozing on his bed beside me as I type.
If you’re at all worried your dog is too…shy, reactive, rambunctious or anything in between please let me tell you otherwise. Why I believe there are No Bad Dogs.
5 Ways to Prepare Your Dog for a Successful Photo Session
- Get some energy out before the session. A tired dog is often a calmer dog. A good walk or play session can help burn off excess energy.
- Bring Favorite Toys and Treats: Familiar items can help keep your dog’s attention and make them feel comfortable.
- Don’t Skip a Meal: If we are shooting around dinner time, feed them first.
- Let Them Smell: Show up 15 minutes early (at least) and let them smell the space we will be shooting in. Smell for a dog is like our site and helps them acclimate to their surroundings
- Never Ever Force a Pose: Insert Taylor Swift “We are never, ever…. Going to force a pose” But in all seriousness, forcing a dog to sit or do a cute Pinterest pose they aren’t comfortable with is a true recipe for disaster.
Additional Tips for a Seamless Photo Experience
Timing, location, and communication are key to a successful photo session with your dog. We’ll choose a time of day that suits your dog’s routine and find a location that reflects your lifestyle. Open communication is vital—I want to know all about your dog’s personality, quirks, and any concerns you have. Flexibility and patience are the final ingredients that allow us to capture those authentic, heartwarming moments.
