Something inside me does a silent leap of joy when a family expresses willingness to stay up a bit later and drive a tad further for photos. Why? The payoff for the bit of extra effort can be exponential rewards in a session that produces postcard-worthy moments of a family adventuring together. A recent trip up to Mt Spokane State Park for a family photography session was just such an evening.
Mt Spokane State Park is Family Friendly
A massive bonus to Mt Spokane State Park for a photography session is the relatively easy access. You can get all the way to the top of the mountain via car June-September. Once you park at the top of the Visa House, multiple chair lifts, rock fields, and wildflowers all provide striking backdrops for any session. A Mt. Spokane engagement or simple family photos can all be accomplished here with easy access.
Mountain Top Photography Bliss
One thing I often look for when scouting family photos is a varied amount of things to capture children’s interest. While Mt Spokane has this in spades (Vista House, ski runs, rocks, etc.), children are often perfectly at home running across the fields at the top of the mountain. Mt Spokane is one of those places you really can let a family exist together while you hang back to capture the memories unfolding.
Do I stop and grab some more posed shots? Absolutely! However, when you’re in a place like this, the magic lies in the in-between moments.
Mt Spokane State Park Details
Mt Spokane State Park is one of my most favorite locations to shoot. However, the top is only accessed June-mid September, which is subject to change with the weather. If this spot is on your list, make sure to time it right with your photographer. For parking, you’ll need a Discover Pass (sold here), and if you’re a photographer, don’t forget to pick up your photography permit. They do check up top occasionally.
Even if this isn’t on your list for your next family photography session, I encourage you to pack a lunch, grab your family or furry best friend, and head to the mountain to explore. I wrote another blog all about hiking and visiting this Spokane, WA destination. You can check out more details here- Visiting Mt Spokane.
Serious question. Would you consider heading up the mountain or even driving to the desert for a unique photography session with your family? If yes, we should probably chat. Sessions like this fill my soul.
Cheers!
