Picking Bowl and pitcher for family photos in Riverside state park blog post

If you’ve lived in Spokane for any amount of time, you’ve probably seen this place before—basalt rock formations, a swinging bridge, and the Spokane River running right through it. Bowl and Pitcher family photos are popular for a reason. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Spokane, thanks to its mix of rugged scenery and easy access. But just because it’s well-known doesn’t mean it works for every family. Here’s what to expect if you’re thinking about a session here.

So, let’s talk through what it’s actually like to have a session here—what to love, what to plan around, and how to know if it’s a good fit for your family.

Not every photo spot has to be a hidden gem—sometimes iconic is what you need this year

Why Families Love Bowl and Pitcher

Bowl and Pitcher is part of Riverside State Park, just outside north Spokane, and it brings a lot to the table for family photography:

  • The suspension bridge is a visual anchor (and kids love it). It also corrals kids together in one spot for more than 20 seconds.
  • You’ve got a mix of paved paths and wooded trails.
  • There’s a bold backdrop of basalt rock and moving water—so even if the light’s flat or the season’s in-between, your photos still have depth.
  • As long as it’s not too busy, there is a great spot to walk into the water for photos.
  • Beyond just the bridge there are lots of amazing photo opportunities 5 minutes the parking lot.
  • Great bathrooms. Real ones not the sketchy vault toilets at most Riverside State Park spots.

It’s accessible, familiar, and full of natural texture, especially if you’re looking for a location that feels tied to the Inland Northwest.

Bonus – This spot makes an epic large print photo with the bridge in the background.  Put it on metal and the water pops even more.

What to Know Before Your Bowl and Pitcher Family Photos

Here’s the straightforward version – What I tell any client who’s never been here but is considering it for photos.

1. Light goes quickly down by the river

Evening sessions are great, but you’ll want to arrive a bit early. The light fades fast as it drops behind the trees and rock formations, especially in fall and winter. This might be a win if you have a child that can’t hang until golden hour.

2. Weekends are busy in Riverside State Park

This spot especially gets a lot of traffic from families, bikers, and campers. If we can swing a weekday evening, you’ll get more space (and less stress). I tend to stay away from here on weekends in the summer.

3. Shoes matter

While there are paved sections, many of the best photo spots are just off the main trail on rocks, gravel, or dirt. Bring shoes that let you move easily and safely. At the minimum, break a second bare of shoes to walk in and swap out. This is even more important for kids as the we want them to have good footing by the river.

4. Wear color that works with the environment

Bowl and Pitcher has a cooler-toned palette—river blues, gray rock, green trees. Rich earth tones or bold primary colors stand out in a good way. Pale neutrals can wash out, especially on overcast days.

5. Pack your Patient Pants

This is a very shared public space. We might pause while a biker rolls through or another family walks the bridge and stops for a few quick photos. That’s very normal for this spot, and we’ll work around it.

Is This Spot a Good Fit for Your Next Family Photos?

Bowl and Pitcher works well for:

  • Families with confident walkers or babies being carried
  • Maternity sessions (relatively flat trails and easy access)
  • Anyone who wants a bold backdrop that feels like Spokane
  • Dogs not easily rattled but a lot going on – Other dogs, bikes, families etc.

It’s less ideal if:

  • You’ve got a toddler who’s still in the wandering phase (there are river ledges and uneven terrain)
  • Your dog is leash-reactive. Riverside State Park is a dog-friendly park, but the narrow bridge at Bowl and Pitcher plus busy paths can be a lot to manage, Don’t let this deter you though, dogs are my jam and I have lots of options for every dog personality.
  • You’re hoping for a decent amount privacy (it’s public, and usually active)

Bowl and Pitcher Family Photos in Every Season

Spring – Grass is popping up and wildflowers are starting to show up, too.  By the time snow starts melting off Mt Spokane the river is really raging and impressive. If it rains, there are some options for shelter in the trees.

Summer – Warm light, shaded trails, and the river gives you that “endless summer” feeling—just watch for increased foot traffic. However, it’s always a few degrees cooler in here. When the dreaded wildfire smoke rolls in this place get feel a little worse than others.

Fall – Subtle color changes thanks to the evergreens, but enough variety with the rocks and bridge that your photos still feel full even when the leaves start to drop. This is a good spot to go when we are in the in between phase of seasons.

Winter – Surprisingly accessible. The parking lot is maintained, and snow over the rocks is beautiful. Just expect some slick spots if it’s icy. If you’re lucky and get the mist rolling over the river, it’s pure magic.

A Few Logistics Worth Mentioning When Your Family Photos Are At Bowl and Pitcher

  • Bathrooms: Yep, they’re here—and in better shape than most photo locations I shoot at. It’s weird to say I have a favorite bathroom, but these are it.
  • Parking: Close and well-maintained, even in winter. You do need a Discover Pass since it’s Washington State park.
  • Photographer permits: Required for all professional sessions. I have one. (If you’re working with someone else, double-check. Rangers are kind but strict.)

Final Thought

Bowl and Pitcher family photos aren’t about chasing something new, they’re about leaning into something iconic and already meaningful. If you’ve hiked this trail before, waded in the water with your kids, or just love that this spot looks like home, it can be the perfect place to photograph your family as they are right now.
