Blog Writing Q and A | Guest Blog, Neyssa Lee Photography

blog writing tips

We know we all need to do blog writing for SEO and overall exposure; however, it doesn’t come easy if you’re like me. I’ve never been one who can effortlessly crank seven blogs out a month and have them sound cohesive and well thought out. Can you relate?

This month I wanted to dive more into the SEO challenges of photographers, but it seemed like before we talk about SEO blogging, we should talk about the basics of blogging first. Since I’m not an expert, I brought a friend in who is, Neyssa Lee of Neyssa Lee Photography.

Q. Before we dig into blog writing, Neyssa, tell me about you!

I am Neyssa Lee, owner of Neyssa Lee Photography, and a mother of six kids.

When I started my business, I knew very little about running a business (despite having a degree in business!). I was passionate about capturing families and doing so in a relaxed way. However, in a way that ensured I documented children’s lives.

But I found it discouraging just waiting for clients to find me. So, I started blog writing. I didn’t realize then how much it would impact my business.

I love blogging because it is so beneficial for businesses. It can help my website’s SEO, help me attract new clients, and help me educate those who book with me. It is also something I can do from the comfort of my couch.

Q. Do you have a typical structure you use when writing a blog?

Yes! Even though I love to blog, I am still a busy mom running a business. I don’t have time to waste recreating the wheel. I also want to ensure my audience can understand the content easily.

That is why I stick with the general framework of introduction with 3-5 supporting points and a conclusion.

If you want to get into the nitty-gritty of how I structure a blog post, you can read about it over on my blog. Blog Writing Tips.

Q. How do you come up with ideas to blog about?

I come up with ideas for blogs in several ways. First, I think about what people might be searching for on google. I write blogs that would share about the client experience while hitting those keywords.

Next, I look at my client’s experience. What does my client need to know about working with me? What would help someone have a better experience with me?

Finally, I turn frequently asked questions into blog posts. An FAQ could be something I often hear, like “can I include my pets in my newborn photo session” or something that might be a potential concern of a parent, like “my toddler is too wild for newborn photos.”

Q. When starting blog writing, what’s one common mistake you see people make, and how can we avoid it?

I’m going to cheat and say two things. People’s most significant blogging mistake is not blogging at all or writing blogs that provide no value at all. An example would be a blog with all images or very few words that simply exclaim how great something was or how much they love doing something.

The next mistake is packing WAY too much into one blog post. Instead of keeping it simple and on topic, people will mistakenly add everything but the kitchen sink into one article. This is overwhelming and confusing to the reader.

Q You’ve been blogging for a while and have a system. How much time does it take to create one post?

Realistically? I would say that a single blog takes me about 45 minutes to 1 hour. That may feel like a lot; however, I can gain so much from a single blog post. Blog writing is the best way I spend my time.

If it is taking you way longer, consider breaking down the process a bit to find ways to streamline it and batch your blogs to get more done faster.
